Applies to:Windows Vista RequirementsWindows Vista Author/SupplierMicrosoft File NameVarious File Size17MB [Click here to download] DescriptionThe August 2007 patches for Windows Vista are listed below. They fix many security holes in Windows Vista - including problems listed as critical. Important note: In August 2007, Microsoft released a complicated update involving the Microsoft XML Core Services files. The correct patch to apply depends upon: the version of the XML Core Services installed (there are four different releases) and the version of Windows and/or Microsoft Office installed on your computer. All up, there are over 30 possible combinations and around 20 different patches for this single problem. Consequently, we have linked to the Microsoft support document that gives further details, rather than supplying download links for the ridiculous number of patches involved. Click on the last item in this list to be taken to the relevant Microsoft support page (it opens in a new Window). According to Microsoft, the XML security issue is critical. In addition, the other three patches should be applied as they are listed as Critical. Applies to:Windows Vista RequirementsWindows Vista Author/SupplierMicrosoft File NameWindows6.0-KB938194-x86.msu File Size2MB [ Click here to download] DescriptionMany visitors and independent testers have reported that the KB938194 reliability update significantly improves the performance of Windows Vista. Naturally, experiences with this update will vary from user to user, but it's rare for such a patch to be so widely endorsed. At 2MB, it is well worth the download. The Windows Vista reliability update, KB938194, is one of two important updates for Windows Vista that were released in August 2007. Both of these updates are widely believed to be significant parts of the upcoming Vista Service Pack 1 (the second update and other patches are available in the Windows section of this site - see the top left navigation menu). The KB938194 download is described by Microsoft in a rather generic style with little fanfare. Apart from the Knowledge Base number (KB938194), you could easily overlook the fact that KB938194 and KB938979 are two separate files. We are not sure why they couldn't be released as a single update, since this update is only 2MB (the other is 10MB) and both updates were released on the same day. Ah, that would be too simple. Here is what bugs are fixed with this tiny download: The screen may go blank when you try to upgrade the video driver. The computer stops responding, and you receive a "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered" error message. You can restart the computer only by pressing the computer's power button. The computer stops responding or restarts unexpectedly when you play video games or perform desktop operations. The Diagnostic Policy Service (DPS) stops responding when the computer is under heavy load or when very little memory is available. This problem prevents diagnostics from working. The screen goes blank after an external display device that is connected to the computer is turned off. For example, this problem may occur when a projector is turned off during a presentation. There are stability issues with some graphics processing units (GPUs). These issues could cause GPUs to stop responding (hang). Visual appearance issues occur when you play graphics-intensive games. You experience poor playback quality when you play HD DVD disks or Blu-ray disks on a large monitor. Applications that load the Netcfgx.dll component exit unexpectedly. Windows Calendar exits unexpectedly after you create a new appointment, create a new task, and then restart the computer. Internet Connection Sharing stops responding after you upgrade a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP to Windows Vista and then restart the computer. The Printer Spooler service stops unexpectedly. You receive a "Stop 0x0000009F" error when you put the computer to sleep while a Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) connection is active.

Applies to:Windows Vista RequirementsWindows Vista Author/SupplierMicrosoft File NameWindows6.0-KB938979-x86.msu File Size10MB [ Click here to download] DescriptionMany visitors and independent testers have reported that the KB938979 reliability update significantly improves the performance of Windows Vista. Naturally, experiences with this update will vary from user to user, but it's rare for such a patch to be so widely endorsed. At 10MB, it is well worth the download. The Windows Vista reliability update, KB938979, is one of two important updates for Windows Vista that were released in August 2007. Both of these updates are widely believed to be significant parts of the upcoming Vista Service Pack 1 (the second update and other Vista patches are available in the Windows section of this site - see the top left navigation menu). The KB938979 download is described by Microsoft in a rather generic style. The patch 'improves the performance and reliability of Windows Vista.' However, more specifically, it fixes the following: You experience a long delay when you try to exit the Photos screen saver. A memory leak occurs when you use the Windows Energy screen saver. If User Account Control is disabled on the computer, you cannot install a network printer successfully. This problem occurs if the network printer is hosted by a Windows XP-based or a Windows Server 2003-based computer. When you write data to an AVI file by using the AVIStreamWrite function, the file header of the AVI file is corrupted. When you copy or move a large file, the "estimated time remaining" takes a long time to be calculated and displayed. After you resume the computer from hibernation, it takes a long time to display the logon screen. When you synchronize an offline file to a server, the offline file is corrupted. If you edit an image file that uses the RAW image format, data loss occurs in the image file. This problem occurs if the RAW image is from any of the following digital SLR camera models: Canon EOS 1D Files from a Canon EOD 1D or 1DS camera may be corrupted after you use Windows Photo Gallery, Windows Live Photo Gallery, or Windows Explorer to edit the file metadata in Windows Vista or in Windows XP Service Pack 2 After you resume the computer from hibernation, the computer loses its default gateway address. Poor memory management performance occurs.

Applies to:Windows XP, XP 64-bit, Vista (all versions), Windows Server 2003 RequirementsWindows XP, XP 64-bit, Vista (all versions), 2003 Author/SupplierMicrosoft File Namedirectx_aug2007_redist.exe File Size58MB [ Click here to download] DescriptionDirectX 9.0c will help improve multimedia experiences on most PCs. This latest version of DirectX offers better security, updated graphics, faster frame rates, and support for massively multiplayer games. It also features more immersive audio when running and displaying programs rich in multimedia elements such as full-color graphics, video, 3-D animation and surround sound. If you had an earlier version of DirectX installed on your system, you will see little difference in available space on your hard drive following the installation. DirectX 9.0c will overwrite any earlier versions. This release also resolves a number of minor bugs and includes security updates. Important notes:This is the 'redist' version of DirectX - all files are downloaded in one package (rather than an active download). Instructions: make a system backup or restore point. Double-click on the file once the download has completed. You will be asked where you want to place the extracted files. This is a temporary folder only - you can delete these files once the Direct X 9.0c installation has completed. Now go to that temporary folder. There will be lots of files in there - run DXSETUP.exe and wait for it to complete the installation. Restart you computer if required. Now you can delete the files in the temporary folder. For future use, you can keep the file you downloaded or simply delete it - it doesn't matter. DirectX is a crucial system component. It cannot be uninstalled without reinstalling your operating system (!) or performing a system restore/system recovery. To determine what version is current installed on your system and other tips about DirectX, see our guide here. This version of DirectX was released August 2007.

Applies to:Windows 98/Me/2000/XP RequirementsWindows 98/Me2000/XP File Size5.5MB File NameShockwave_Installer_Full.exe Author/SupplierMacromedia [ Click here to Download] DescriptionMacromedia's Shockwave Player allows you to view interactive web content like games, business presentations, entertainment and advertisements (just what the Web needs - more ways to view ads!). The package includes both Shockwave and Flash Players and is a stand alone installation. You can download the file to install at a later date or use it to reinstall the player on a fresh version of Windows. The single download package makes it much easier to troubleshoot problems and you don't have to go through the active download process each time you need to install the player. According to a Macromedia security bulletins, Shockwave Player 10.2.0.022 fixes security problems. They say that critical vulnerabilities have been identified that could allow an attacker who successfully exploits these vulnerabilities to take control of the affected system. Adobe categorises this as a critical update and recommends affected users update to version 10.2.0.022.

You can download the file to install at a later date or use it to reinstall the player on a fresh version of Windows. The single download package makes it much easier to troubleshoot problems and you don't have to go through the active download process each time you need to install the player. Applies to:Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 RequirementsWindows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 Author/SupplierMicrosoft File NameWindows-KB890830-V1.32.exe File Size7.5MB [ Click here to download] DescriptionThis is a good initiative from Microsoft, but it can also be extraordinarily confusing to use. Here's the story. The Removal Tool will detect and delete various pests that are running on your system. Currently this list includes: MSBlast (Blaster), Mydoom, Nachi, Sasser, Netsky, Bagle, Sdbot, Locksky, Wukill, Zotob, Atak, Torvil, Zlob, WinNT/F4IRootkit (which exploits Sony's poorly-conceived copy protection system) and approximately 50 other viruses. However, it does not scan all your files like antivirus software - the Removal Tool only targets those viruses that are currently running on your system. If you have an infected file but the virus is not yet active (eg an infected email attachment that you haven't run) then this tool will not touch it. For this job, you will still need an antivirus program. Version 1.32 was released in August 2007.
